April Scrap Metal Report: Copper Holds Strong, Jobs Picking Up

Copper held strong and jobs are picking up. Here’s what we’re seeing across non-ferrous scrap in the Greater Boston and North Shore market.

Market Recap

April Market Recap

April was another active month across the non-ferrous market. Copper pushed higher, aluminum stayed firm, and brass remained supported as spring contractor activity picked up.

Markets continue to move quickly, but one theme remains clear: clean, sorted non-ferrous material is being rewarded. Whether you're an electrician cleaning out wire, a plumber bringing in brass, or a contractor clearing a jobsite, understanding what you have can make a real difference.

Quick Takes This Month

April at a Glance

  • Copper led the market in April
  • Aluminum stayed firm, especially on cleaner grades
  • Brass remained supported by copper strength
  • Clean sorted non-ferrous scrap continues to pay best
  • Jobsite activity is beginning to ramp up

Quick Market Notes

What Moved in April

Aluminum Stayed Firm

Aluminum quietly remained solid through April. Clean sheet, extrusion, cast aluminum, and wheels all stayed active as spring activity increased.

Brass Benefited from Copper Strength

Brass markets were supported by copper’s move higher. Plumbing brass, valves, and mixed yellow brass remained worthwhile to separate.

Spring Contractor Season Has Begun

Warmer weather usually means more renovation work, electrical jobs, plumbing cleanouts, and demolition activity. That often leads to more non-ferrous scrap hitting the market.

What We’re Seeing Locally

More Jobs Means More Scrap

April marked the start of the busy season across job sites. As weather improved, we saw more material coming in from construction projects, electrical work, plumbing jobs, and renovations.

At the yard, that showed up in real numbers:

  • Insulated wire volume increased 8% vs. March
  • #1 and #2 copper combined rose nearly 20%

More jobs means more scrap, and in this market, that scrap carries real value.

If you're working jobs this spring, it’s worth paying closer attention to what’s ending up in your scrap pile.

Market Insights

Copper Moved Higher in April and Held Off a Late Pullback. Here’s What It Means:

After a volatile March, copper regained momentum through most of April, climbing back toward recent highs as supply concerns and steady demand supported the market.

For much of the month, copper pricing stayed firm. Continued investment in infrastructure, electrification, and data center expansion helped reinforce the long-term demand story. At the same time, limited new mine supply kept a floor under the market.

Late in the month, copper saw some selling pressure and briefly pulled back. But instead of breaking down further, prices stabilized and recovered, showing continued strength in the market.

The good news for sellers: Copper spent most of April at strong levels, and even after the late-month volatility, pricing for common scrap like pipe, wire, and copper solids remained attractive compared to historical averages.

For contractors and scrappers, this kind of market creates opportunity. When copper moves like this, timing becomes more important. Selling into strength versus waiting through dips can make a noticeable difference.

Bottom line: April showed that copper demand remains strong and the market is holding up well. Expect continued movement, but with a solid foundation underneath.

What to watch:
If demand from infrastructure and energy projects stays strong, copper could push higher again. If broader economic uncertainty returns, expect short-term swings, but with support still in place.

Straight Deal. Every Time.
